Merchants ask this before they've connected anything: Claude or ChatGPT? It's a reasonable question to get stuck on, since picking wrong feels like it might cost you something. It won't. Here's what actually differs, and what doesn't.
Same Mercopilot, either way
Connect either one and you get the same tools, reading the same store. Nothing in Mercopilot is held back for Claude and unlocked for ChatGPT, or the other way around. Ask "where am I losing money" in Claude and you get the same answer you'd get from ChatGPT, because both are talking to the same MCP server behind your account. The assistant is just the client you're typing into.
So this isn't a decision about which one is smarter at running your store. It's a decision about which one is less friction to set up and use day to day, and that comes down to two things: what you already use, and how each one handles adding a connector.
If you're already paying for one, start there
If you've already got a ChatGPT Plus subscription, or your team lives in Claude, connect Mercopilot to that one first. There's no benefit to running both assistants just to ask one of them about your store, and switching tools you're used to is its own small cost. The Claude guide and the ChatGPT guide both take a couple of minutes, and nothing about picking one now stops you from adding the other later. One Mercopilot subscription covers both.
If you're starting from nothing, the plans matter more than the model
Without an existing habit to follow, the deciding factor tends to be what each one lets you do on a free account. Claude's free plan can add Mercopilot as a custom connector today, one at a time. ChatGPT's equivalent route, the one where you paste in the server address yourself, needs a paid plan: Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu. Its plugin directory is visible on every plan, but whether the connect button actually works depends on your plan and your region.
In practice, that means someone with no paid AI subscription at all gets to a working connection fastest through Claude. Someone already on ChatGPT Plus loses nothing by using the plan they're paying for anyway.
The setup itself looks a little different
Claude asks for an MCP server address once, whether you're on the desktop app, the web, your phone, or Claude Code. ChatGPT splits into two separate routes: find Mercopilot in its plugin directory and click Connect, or turn on developer mode and paste the address in yourself. Both land you on the same Mercopilot sign-in screen either way, where you approve the connection and pick which store it can see. Neither asks for an API key. Neither one can touch your store without you approving the change first, which is true regardless of which assistant you're typing into.
Try both, if you want
There's no rule against running Mercopilot in both. Some merchants ask Claude for the weekly rundown and switch to ChatGPT because that's what's already open on their phone when a question comes up. Mercopilot doesn't care which one asks, and your subscription doesn't change based on how many clients you connect it to.
Not connected to either yet? The quick start guide covers the fastest path from a Shopify store to your first answer, using whichever one you pick.
Stop asking “how many orders did I get?” Start asking what to fix first
Connect Shopify and Google Ads and see where the money is going — the best seller about to run out, the stock that has stopped moving, the search terms you pay for that never sell. Every fix comes with what it's worth, and getting it done is one word away.
